Set a public username first
Telegram accounts need a username before they can be reached by link. Set one in your Telegram settings, then put it in the Telegram username field without the @ symbol.
Decide between a chat, a group and a channel
A username opens a direct chat, a group username opens a joinable group, and a channel username opens a broadcast channel. All three use the same address format, so the code is identical — only the destination differs.
Check it resolves while logged out
Open the link in a private browsing window. A username that has not been set, or a private group without an invite link, shows a not-found page rather than anything useful.
Test the scan on a phone
Confirm the code opens Telegram and lands on the right chat. Usernames are easy to mistype and a wrong one produces a plausible page that simply belongs to somebody else.
What goes wrong, and how to avoid it
No username set on the account
Telegram accounts are reachable by phone number by default and need a username explicitly set before any t.me link works. Generating a code for an account without one produces a link that resolves to nothing, and the failure is only visible when someone scans it.
Including the @ symbol
Telegram displays usernames with a leading @, but the link format does not include it. Entering @yourchannel produces t.me/@yourchannel, which does not resolve. It is an easy mistake because the @ appears everywhere in the app's own interface.
Private groups without an invite link
Private groups have no public username, so they cannot be reached this way. They need an invite link generated inside Telegram, which is a longer address better handled with the URL generator — and one that can be revoked, breaking printed codes.
Assuming the audience uses Telegram
Telegram's popularity varies enormously by country and demographic. In markets where it is uncommon, a code assumes an app most people scanning will not have, and the fallback is an install prompt rather than a conversation. Match the platform to the audience.
Usernames can be released and reclaimed
Changing your username frees the old one for anyone else to take, and every printed code then points at whoever claims it. Because Telegram usernames are also traded, a desirable one may be taken quickly. Settle on a username before printing at volume.
Device and app compatibility
The payload is a standard https link to t.me, so every scanner handles it. With Telegram installed the link opens the app directly on the correct chat, group or channel. Without it, t.me shows a web page offering to open Telegram Web or install the app, which is a reasonable fallback rather than a dead end. Telegram Web works well on desktop, so a scan from a laptop is functional rather than merely informational. The main variable is not technical but geographic — Telegram's install base differs sharply between markets, and a code is only as good as the likelihood the scanner has the app.
t.me is Telegram's own short domain, so the payload stays brief and the pattern coarse — usually shorter than an equivalent WhatsApp link, which must carry a full international phone number in the path.
